Our volunteer orientations are designed to give you all the information you need about a particular volunteer activity. It is a great opportunity to meet with the coordinator, learn about the activity, and meet other volunteers. Please feel free to attend any or all orientations.
All orientations are held at the Visitor Center. If you want to get involved but cannot attend a scheduled orientation, please call as some coordinators will provide individual training.
Please note: New volunteers should email us at email@example.com to register.
Trainings and orientations are subject to change due to inclement weather, so if in doubt, please call the Visitor Center at 845-255-0919.
2018 Volunteer Orientation and Training
Join our Trailhead Ambassador group and play a vital role in welcoming new and returning visitors to the Preserve during our busy summer and fall seasons. Share your love of the land by meeting and greeting the visiting public, give out general information, and offer suggestions on hikes. This is primarily an outdoor position located at the Spring Farm and Coxing trailheads, as well as outside the Visitor Center.
Sign up for the Trailhead Ambassador orientation on Saturday, August 25th at 9:00 AM at the Visitor Center. Register here to reserve your spot.
Dog lovers and owners are especially encouraged to join, but this group is open to all volunteers. Dog Ambassadors will be responsible for educating guests with dogs on the Preserve’s dog walking policies. Volunteers will visit high trafficked dog walking areas at the Testimonial Gateway, Spring Farm, and climbing cliffs on Undercliff Road to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all. Volunteers are encouraged, but not required, to bring their well-behaved and leashed dog on their shifts to set a positive example.
The Dog Ambassadors orientation is on Saturday, August 25th at 11:00 AM at the Visitor Center. Please register for the orientation.
This orientation will provide you with an overview of the Mohonk Preserve Hawk Watch volunteer group. Volunteers will assist in identifying hawks in flight and recording data. Additionally, volunteers will contribute data to the Hawk Migration of North America (HMANA) database. Must be available weekly early September through late November.
Please join us at the Hawk Watch Volunteer Orientation on Monday, August 20th from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM in the Visitor Center Conference Room. Register today for the training.
Bike Ride Leader
This volunteer position is responsible for leading adult recreational bike rides on Mohonk Preserve’s historic carriage roads. These are guided bike rides at varying levels of difficulty which take place throughout the year. Volunteers are needed to lead group rides at easy to moderate levels. Leadership experience is preferred as well as knowledge of the Preserve’s carriage road network. Basic bicycle mechanics, like the ability to fix a flat, is helpful. Training will be provided.
The Bike Ride Leader orientation is on Tuesday, September 11th at 6:00 PM at the Visitor Center. Please register for the orientation.
Join our Volunteer Educators this fall and help educate children in nature. This position is responsible for supporting staff educators during field study programs for school children. These trips are conducted during the spring and fall for several school districts and individual classes from other schools. The program is set up in a sequential arrangement that ties in directly with grade level curriculum requirements. All or part of each trip takes place outdoors on Preserve property.
The Volunteer Educator orientation will be held at the Visitor Center on Tuesday, September 11 at 9:00 AM for new volunteers. Returning Volunteer Educators to meet at 9:30 AM. Please reserve your spot here.
