Community Science Coordinator

About the Position:
As a core member of the Conservation Programs department, the Community Science Coordinator is responsible for administering Mohonk Preserve’s volunteer environmental monitoring and naturalist programs, engaging volunteers in support of conservation initiatives, delivering public programs, liaising with interested community groups, and providing conservation content for the Preserve’s communications.

The Community Science Coordinator will work closely with the Preserve’s Education, Visitor Experience and Marketing & Communications departments to ensure that conservation information is effectively delivered to as wide an audience as possible and community members are empowered to participate in the practice of conservation science at Mohonk Preserve.

The Community Science Coordinator reports to the Director of Conservation Programs.

Full time (40 hours per week), Regular, Non-exempt

Low $40s per year; Mohonk Preserve membership for the duration of the position.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversee all aspects of Mohonk Preserve’s volunteer environmental monitoring and naturalist programs including volunteer recruitment, training, data management, and reporting.
  • Work with Mohonk Preserve staff and key stakeholders to ensure that volunteer efforts are effectively matched with organizational needs related to long-term natural history data, conservation initiatives and land management.
  • Organize and lead outreach activities including education programming, nature walks and public presentations.
  • Contribute written reports, media articles, social media content and other outreach materials for use in Mohonk Preserve’s communications with partners and the public.
  • Seek to maximize the reach and relevance of existing and new volunteer and outreach programs in engaging diverse communities in the Preserve’s conservation mission and the practice of conservation science.
  • Assist Research Ecologist in baseline natural history data collection and additional research projects.
  • Assist Conservation Science staff with supervision of interns and coordination with relevant Research Associate projects.
  • Participate in the ongoing efforts to digitize the Preserve’s key natural history collections.
  • Participate in fundraising activities and grant proposal development to support the Preserve’s Conservation Programs.
  • Perform other related duties to support the Conservation Programs department and Preserve as assigned by the Director of Conservation Programs.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, or related field, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Self-starter with ability to design, implement and evaluate new programs.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and enthusiasm for working with the public.
  • Excellent communication abilities including written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Experience engaging individuals from diverse backgrounds in conservation-related projects.
  • Proven ability to set and implement priorities and manage multiple projects.
  • Willingness to work occasional irregular hours, including some weekends, evenings, and/or holidays.
  • Ability to navigate and traverse, at times in deep back country, while carrying equipment in all weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license; clean driving record; ability to pass background check.
    • Bonus skills:
  • Strong knowledge of regional flora and fauna;
  • Familiarity with natural history/specimen collections;
  • Volunteer management experience;
  • Environmental education experience;
  • Bi-lingual;

Mohonk Preserve’s main offices are located at our Visitor Center in Gardiner, NY. This position will be based out of the Preserve’s Daniel Smiley Research Center (DSRC) on the grounds of the Mohonk Mountain House resort. Mohonk Preserve offers hybrid work schedules at this time – coordinated with their supervisor and depending on the job, staff may be able to split time working remotely, as well as in the office and in-person on the land. Generally standard working hours, with some flexibility, to be coordinated with supervisor.

COVID-19 Considerations:
The health and safety of our employees and their families is of the utmost importance. Mohonk Preserve requires all staff either to provide proof of being fully vaccinated or, if they cannot provide such proof for any reason, to wear a mask while working indoors, including in all Preserve facilities and while working outdoors in situations where they cannot maintain social distancing. Regular testing may be required for the unvaccinated. In addition, at this time and until CDC recommendations change, all staff in counties the CDC identifies as having “substantial” and “high” COVID transmission rates must wear masks indoors (unless alone in a closed office) and outdoors in situations where they cannot maintain social distancing regardless of vaccination status.  All employees are expected to adhere to required Mohonk Preserve COVID protocols.
