A special year-end request

from Director of Land Protection, Julia Solomon

“Few spots on our continent unite so much beauty of scenery, both grand and lovely, within so small a compass, to be enjoyed with so much ease.” - Arnold Guyot

One of the things I love most about Mohonk Preserve is that it is so many things to so many people. From bouldering to biking to botanizing, the Preserve offers an incredible diversity of experiences, reflecting the diversity of its natural habitats.

That we should care for the things we love is a simple lesson, learned in childhood and taught to our children in turn, but applying that lesson in a complex and changing world is anything but straightforward.

If you are like me, you are sometimes daunted by news of environmental catastrophe at scales so large as to be almost unimaginable. Now, more than ever, Mohonk Preserve has an important role to play. Our forests store carbon and our mountain slopes and meadows provide safe harbor for wildlife and plants. Our land also offers refuge to people.

This land is a source of joy, solace and inspiration. It connects us to each other and to something greater. It offers opportunities for hope, gratitude and pure, giddy fun. I suspect that you already know this and agree that a place this valuable is worth protecting – and supporting.

With these thoughts in mind, I ask you to join me by supporting the Preserve with a year-end gift. Your contribution to our annual fund, at any amount, reflects your faith in our mission to protect this land and honors the special place that Mohonk Preserve holds in your heart.
