Stargazing: Perseid Shower Viewing

August 12 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Stars in the night sky, a tree top in shadow at the bottom

[Rain/Cloud dates: Friday, August 13th or Saturday, August 14th] Please join us for a guided tour of the night sky and view the Perseids Meteor Shower! John R. Kirk Planetarium Director Raj Pandya will lead us through the stars and constellations. Each year in August, Earth passes through the trail of debris left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Small bits of dust left behind by the comet burn up in Earth’s atmosphere, creating a meteor shower.  Shooting stars appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, hence the name, “Perseids.” The dark skies undisturbed by major light pollution at the Mohonk Preserve are an outstanding viewing location.  Bring a flashlight, warm layers, and a camp chair or blanket to lay on. Masks are required for those not fully vaccinated. Children age 5 and up are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult. Registration is required and limited; register early. No walk ins. Fee: $10 per person.

Click here to register by logging into our new online portal.
