The following are frequently asked questions about our camp program:
Q: Your summer camps are so popular - we’ve been trying to get in for years! Why don’t you offer more sessions to serve more children?
A: Our camps are popular, in part, because of the small group size. Our Peregrine and Mountainside Adventure sessions are capped at 19 campers each. New in 2014, we have added a camp, Young Explorers for campers ages 4-6. Our new camp will have a capacity of 12 campers per session. The safety of our campers is our highest priority. All camps require provisions for indoor accommodations in the event of thunderstorms, high winds, or other severe summer weather. The Preserve has limited indoor space at our Visitor Center and all rooms are in full use throughout the summer months. We offer 4 sessions of Young Explorers, 3 sessions of Camp Peregrine, and 2 sessions of Mountainside Adventures.
Q: Why is early registration offered for returning campers?
A: Returning campers are given a 48 hour window to register online before the general registration opens. This is a common practice amongst many camps in our area and allows us to foster a deeper relationship with campers and their families.
Q: Why can’t sibling and friend pairs be guaranteed registration in the same camp session?
A: Our online registration operates on a first come, first serve basis, and some sessions fill quickly. Also, our camps seek a closely balanced gender ratio. It is impossible for us to guarantee spots for siblings and friend pairs, but we have added 2 more camper spots to both Camp Peregrine and Mountainside Adventures for 2014. We encourage you to plan ahead and register early. Once a camp session is full, we encourage you to use the wait-list.
Q: Camp fees are a hardship for us. Do you have scholarships available?
A: Yes. The Mohonk Preserve is committed to serving children, regardless of their economic status. Scholarship applications must be post-marked by February 1st and must include all required paperwork. Scholarship recipients will be notified prior to registration. Q: Where does the camp meet each day?
A: Camp Peregrine and Mountainside Adventures rove on Mohonk Preserve and Mohonk Mountain House land. In order to optimize the camper experience, and explore the treasures of the ridge, drop-off and pick-up points vary each day depending on theme and activity. Parents are given a detailed schedule in advance and provided with a map (including an online, customized Google map).
Our Young Explorers camp meets at the Visitor Center, but has field program days each week at other locations on the Preserve. Parents will receive a schedule and map with drop-off and pick-up points for those days.
Q: I am a working parent. What are the hours of your camps?
A: Young Explorers runs from 9am until 12pm. Our Camp Peregrine and Mountainside Adventure programs run from 9am-3pm. Because of the unique nature of this program, we are not able to offer before or after care. Drop off and pick up must be sharp.
Q: What happens if I register my child and our plans change? Can I get a refund?
A: Tuition and the enrollment fee are required at the time of registration and are non-refundable. Please plan accordingly before registering.
