Land Protection

Although located only 90 miles from New York City and within a half-day’s drive of over 20 million people, much of the Mohonk Preserve has been spared from intensive development--thanks to decades of effort to protect scenic views, wildlife habitat, forests, streams, and more.

This work is still needed to ensure the future of the Shawangunks. Today, only 40% of the entire Ridge is permanently protected. Increasing development pressures in surrounding areas and the slopes of the Ridge itself can pollute soil and water, harm wildlife, mar views, and reduce open space.

The Mohonk Preserve is doing its part to safeguard the Ridge now and for the future by protecting land and partnering with neighboring communities and other conservation organizations.
