Mike Todd didn’t know anyone when he moved here in 2000.
So the Pennsylvania native and Hopewell Junction resident bought a local hiking guide and started trekking.
“I’d grown up hiking with my family ... so I’ve always loved the outdoors,” Todd said, “but I’d never lived in an area with so many awesome hikes within striking distance of home. If you begin in Poughkeepsie and start driving in literally any direction, you’ll hit an awesome place to hike in less than an hour.”
In fact, 279 million people visited national parks last year, according to the National Parks Service, a system that encompasses 398 areas over 85 million acres across the country.
Five years ago, Todd created an online trails source, www.hikethehudsonvalley.com, which offers a list of 47 (and counting) Hudson Valley trails, including his down-to-earth commentary on each trail and photographs, plus Google Map markers for trailheads, terrain maps from GPS data and Google Earth flyover videos.
