All of us at Mohonk Preserve are saddened by the passing of Douglas Tompkins and would like to extend our deepest condolences to Kristine Tompkins and the entire Tompkins Family for their loss.
It was our honor to have presented the Long View Conservation Award to Doug and Kris this past October at our New York City Gala. For Doug in particular, his upbringing in Millbrook, NY and his time spent climbing in the Gunks in the 1950s and 60s deeply influenced his love and appreciation for the natural world. This would be the beginning of one of the world’s greatest conservation success stories, with both Doug and Kris going on to protect more than two million acres of land in South America.
Doug’s extraordinary life is a reminder to us all that we are merely the temporary stewards of the natural world and we are obligated as humans to protect the environment for future generations.
