NEW PALTZ - It was a morning-of-mornings for the people who gathered Thursday in the shadow of the Shawangunk Ridge.
The land that stretched out before the crowd of environmentalists would soon become a public trailhead to the ridge and its various glories.
The $48,000 that will help make that transformation possible was a pinch of the total amount of money the crowd had gathered to celebrate - $1.4 million in state conservation grants that will be divvied up among 57 land trusts across the state, along with $1.3 million in matching funds from private donors.
