The Mohonk Preserve has four trailheads

One in the Northern Preserve (Spring Farm) and three in the Southern Preserve (Visitor Center, West Trapps, and Coxing). The numbers correspond to the trailhead numbers on the map to the right.  You can reach New Paltz via a Trailways bus, but there is no public transportation to the Mohonk Preserve.

1 Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center: Hiking Allowed

The largest of the Preserve’s parking lots, the Visitor Center lot may have spaces when the West Trapps or Coxing Trailhead lots are full.

To reach the Visitor Center, take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go 7 miles west (through New Paltz) on Route 299 to the end: make right on Route 44-55 and then 1/2 mile to the Visitor Center on right. If that lot is full, continue a few hundred yards farther up hill to the entrance to additional, overflow parking lots at the Visitor Center.

Leaving from the Visitor Center, the ¼-mile East Trapps Connector Trail is a strenuous set of stone steps leading visitors uphill to a network of more than 100 miles of carriage roads and trails and to the West Trapps climbing cliffs. Please note that the East Trapps Connector Trail is closed during the winter.

2 West Trapps Trailhead: Hiking Allowed Biking Allowed

This parking lot fills VERY early on peak weekends.
On summer and fall weekends, arrive early and consider carpooling to ensure a parking space at West Trapps. Or park at the Visitor Center lot and hike up the East Trapps Connector to the Trapps cliffs and to the beginning of the trail and carriage road network.

Follow the directions for the Visitor Center. Go 1.3 miles past the Visitor Center, and turn right into parking area.

A short, easy walk takes visitors to the beginning of trails you can take that will lead you along the rock climbing cliffs along Undercliff Carriage Road or up to summit views from Preserve lands or onto the neighboring lands of Minnewaska State Park Preserve or the Mohonk Mountain House.

3 Coxing Trailhead: Hiking Allowed

Coxing is the Preserve’s smallest parking lot and fills VERY early on peak weekends. On summer and fall weekends, arrive early and consider carpooling to ensure a parking space.

Follow the directions for the Visitor Center, and go 1.5 miles past the Visitor Center, turn right onto Clove Road, and then bear right at fork. After 1 mile, turn left into parking area.

Located at the site of the former Enderly Family sawmill, Split Rock has long been a favorite place for picnicking by the Coxing Kill (stream). This trailhead provides access to several popular trails through hemlock groves and the stream.

4 Spring Farm Trailhead: Hiking Allowed Biking Allowed Horse Riding Allowed

Spring Farm is one of the Preserve’s smaller parking lots and fills VERY early on peak weekends. On summer and fall weekends, arrive early and consider carpooling to ensure a parking space.

Take the New Paltz exit 18 off of the NYS Thruway. Go west on Route 299 (through New Paltz), go over steel bridge and turn right onto Springtown Road. Make a left onto Mountain Rest Road. Pass the entrance to the Mohonk Mountain House and go under the one-lane bridge. (Horse trailers, note: clearance is only 11 feet. See alternate route below.) Continue on 1 mile, and turn right on Upper 27 Knolls Road. Within ¼ mile, you’ll reach the kiosk for the Spring Farm Trailhead. This is the trailhead for Bonticou Crag as well as the Table Rocks Trail.

Enjoy the "Million Dollar View" of the Catskills – just a short walk from the Spring Farm parking area. Reminders of its earlier agricultural roots, the open fields and broad views at Spring Farm give way to quiet, forested paths.

Equestrian access to Preserve carriage roads is from this trailhead. Space is available for parking horse trailers and carriages. See Ride Your Horse page for more information.

Horse trailers, note: If your trailer is too high to pass under the bridge noted above, consult a road map for an alternate route. Coming from the Thruway, consider taking Route 32 North into Rosendale, 213 West into High Falls, and take a left on Mohonk Road. As you climb the mountain, take a left on Upper 27 Knolls Road. The trailhead is ¼ mile ahead.

Please note that the Mohonk Mountain House is a separate property and resort adjoining the Preserve.

Visit their web site at www.mohonk.com . Questions regarding the Mountain House should be directed to its information line at (845) 255-1000 or (800) 772-6646.
